My suggestion (2c's worth) is to accept them for now, but have an
"escape plan". Push the patches (whatever they take) upstream and throw
away everything else. This plan could have a specific deadline, if that
would be helpful.
The rational is that, if there's a sufficient use base that depends on a
particular feature / enhancement then this should provide some
motivation for the upstream team to accept the enhancements. Of course
this might require some tinkering with the patches to get them accepted.
However, I'm not directly or indirectly affected by this (and my
suggestion would involve more work for others) so feel free to just drop
the features.
